In one of the trials, men taking Viagra were found to have a 25% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared to men taking placebo. The MHRA said it had suspended the trial in August as the drug was known to be associated with increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular events.
In the other trial, a group of men had a 25% increased risk of having a heart attack compared to men taking placebo. Viagra was the only drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
The MHRA said the trial was "uninvestigated and not clinically significant", and recommended further investigation was carried out into the cause of the increased cardiovascular risk. The MHRA also said it was investigating whether Viagra could be used to treat other conditions which could potentially contribute to the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
"The MHRA (The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) is committed to monitoring the safety and efficacy of all medicines we use to treat patients," said Dr Peter Shire, the MHRA's acting commissioner.
"Our review of the results of clinical trials for the drug shows that it has a significant increased risk of cardiovascular events compared to placebo," Dr Shire added. "We continue to advise patients that other options, such as lifestyle changes and other medications, may be more appropriate, particularly when other treatments have not been effective."
A separate MHRA review found the trial had "not been adequately designed to detect cardiovascular effects".
In response to the MHRA's announcement, Dr John lessell, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: "If you're a man with erectile dysfunction and you use Viagra, it's important to talk to your GP first about the possible side effects of Viagra, the effects on your general health, and the risks associated with taking the drug. You may want to talk to your GP about taking other medications. That's important, as it can have a significant impact on your general health. There's also the question of whether the drug may harm your eyesight, and we'd love to know what your GP thinks about that."
Dr Lessell added: "While the drug may not cause heart attacks and strokes in men with mild to moderate risk erectile dysfunction, the risk is still higher in those who take it in combination with other drugs.
"If you think you might have heart problems and take Viagra, stop taking the drug and seek immediate medical attention," he said.
